We also had horses and were doing a horsepack trip, but only for 4 days. Baldy Lake is north of Hwy 114 between Gunnison and Saguache. She was going to stay there a day or two and rest the horses and dog and then get to Poncha Springs which we said would take her 3 days, so she should be there Saturday or Sunday. We told her she could stay with the horses at the Monarch Spur RV Park 8 miles west of Poncha. Trish, it was great to meet you and please let us know if you make the entire trail okay. I was the man by the blue Honda car you asked about a trail near the lake, but my map didn't show the trails and I didn't know what my GPS device was showing at that moment. Sorry I couldn't give more info. but I think that other guy told you where to go around the lake. By now you must have traveled down the mountain to the east of Molas Lake, crossed the bridge over the river, and making progress on the Colorado Trail toward Denver. Sorry to read about your iPhone. You might consider getting a Verizon phone, as its network has great coverage in the wilderness. Other useful equipment would be a McMurdo 406 beacon, which you can use in an emergency to summon help (the new model is very small and is half the price). If you can afford it, a Garmin 550T GPS is great, but maps and a compass are the best. Anyway, I was blown away by you and your healthy horses and dog. Wow! What an adventure you are undertaking! I look forward to reading your posts. If you come to any spots on the trail that are just too dangerous, remember safety first. Best wishes! -AllanWilderness Hikerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03478522883231547372noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574672952911917139.post-11315246857357885782010-08-16T11:36:38.574-07:002010-08-16T11:36:38.574-07:00Hi Trish.
